Kampfgericht
Introduction:
Tell them why table officials are important.
They work together with the referees to help the players
to enjoy a game of basketball by
- accurately timing the periods of
play,
- accurately recording all points
scored and all fouls committed,
- ensuring that all team members
play for two quarters of the game.
Explain that the scorer and timekeeper
work together. There will be times, when the scorer
is writing, that he/she will not be able to see what
is happening on the court. The timekeeper must therefore
be watching the game all the time to make sure that
nothing is missed.
Introduce them to the equipment that
they will be using:
| The
clock |
used
by the timekeeper to time each period of
the game. |
| A loud
sounding device |
used
by the timekeeper to indicate the end of
each period. |
| The
foul markers |
used
by the scorer to indicate how many fouls
a play has. |
| The
scoresheet |
used
by the scorer to record all the details
of the game. |
Explain the duties of the timekeeper.
It is the timekeeper's responsibility
to accurately time each period of play.
The timekeeper starts the clock at the
jump ball when the ball is first touched by one of the
jumping players.
The timekeeper stops the clock
- at the end of each Period (10 minutes),
when he/she also sounds the horn toindicate the
end of playing time.
- when free throws are awarded. [The
clock restarts, after the second free throw, when
the ball touches a player on court].
- for a jump ball. [The clock restarts
when one of the jumping players taps the ball].
- if instructed to do so by the referee.
[The clock restarts when the ball is passed on to
court and is touched by a player].
The timekeeper starts the clock to time
the intervals in between each period. [2 minutes between
the 1st and 2nd Periods, 2 minutes between the 3rd and
4th Periods and 5 minutes between the 2nd and 3rd Periods].
The timekeeper tells the referee when the game should
restart.
The timekeeper also assists the scorer
by watching the game at all times and confirming who
has scored or committed a foul.
Explain the duties of the scorer.
It is the responsibility of the scorer
to accurately record all details of the game on the
scoresheet, especially all points scored and fouls committed.
The mechanics of scoring.
Keep your pen in the your hand at all
times during the periods of play.
When a basket is scored the
scorer should: signal 2 points to the referee and then
enter the score and player number on the scoresheet.
When a foul is committed: wait
for the referee to say who has committed the foul. Enter
the foul on the score sheet against the correct player
then raise the appropriate foul marker to show the referee
that the game should continue.
Use the sample scoresheet and notes
on pages 14 & 15 to teach the different elements
of scoring. These pages may be photocopied and given
to the children.
Explain: that there are three
sections to the scoresheet:
- those that are filled
in before the match begins or at the
beginning of the period.
|
- 3 boxes at the top
of the scoresheet,
- names and colours of
the teams,
- names
and numbers of the players,
- names of the coaches,
- those who will play
in that period.
|
- those filled in during
play.
|
- the score and player's
number,
- fouls.
|
- those filled in at
the end of each period or the end of
the game.
|
- the score, at the end
of each period and at the end
of the game,
- name of the winning
team,
- signatures.
|
It is often helpful to use an overhead
projector with an acetate of a blank scoresheet to demonstrate
how to score [the instructor can fill in the acetate
while the children copy onto a scoresheet].

Wiederholung: the main signals
used between the referees and the table officials.
Allow the children to practice filling
in a scoresheet whilst you provide the appropriate referee's
signals. Encourage them to signal back to you, using
crisp clear signals [arms raised high], include field
goals, fouls and free throws.
