Introduction
The game of Mini Basketball is designed
especially for children and is not just a diluted version
of the adult game of Basketball, it is an important
game in its own right. It is for children and can be
officiated by children. It was with this in mind that
the Mini-Basketball Officiating Award was introduced.
From the very outset of learning the
game the children should be encouraged to officiate,
even at 'scrimmages' (training matches), and thus take
an active part in and learn about this important facet
of the game.
However, it will make the Mini-Basketball
Officiating Award valueless if the children are rushed
into preparing for the Award too early in learning the
game. Certain standards must be set and the children
should have had at least six months of playing the game
before they are prepared for the Award.
Then they should be given a course of
instruction as follows:
Each group of participants should have
at least
- TWO officiating sessions, each
of one hour duration.
- ONE session when they will be shown
how to score and timekeep.
- ONE game session, at which they
officiate as an official (referee or umpire), scorer
and timekeeper.
Sometime later when the tutor (teacher
or coach) feels that they are ready, the participants
can take:
- the game officiating tests
- officiating a short game, when
the participants have to demonstrate they have
a good understanding of how to officiate the
game using the skills learnt in Sessions 1,
2 and 3.
- taking an oral or written test
on the 'Rules of Mini-Basketball'.
- the scoring and timekeeping tests
