MADRID
(Reuters) - A Spanish woman has been included in the
list of referees for the Sydney Olympics and could be
the first to referee a man's game at a major tournament,
the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) told
Reuters on Monday.
Pilar Landeira has
been in charge of Spanish first division matches for
the last 10 years.
``There has never been
a woman referee of a man's game at a major tournament.
Nothing has been decided but there is the possibility
she could be the first,'' a FIBA spokesman said.
Referees are named
by national federations which qualify for the Olympics
and Landeira's chances of going into the history books
have been enhanced by the fact that Spain are only sending
a men's team to Sydney.
The United States and
Canada sent women referees to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics
but they only officiated in the women's tournament.
``It would be a dream
to be in charge of a game with the U.S. Dream Team but
to play any part in the Olympics will be an honor,''
Landeira said.
The confirmation of
Landeira's appointment came on the day that FIBA was
awarded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Women
and Sport world Trophy.
The IOC said that FIBA,
in addition to being at the forefront of encouraging
female participation in the sport, had also made ``special
efforts to include more women in leadership positions.''
